Emotional Freedom Techniques
A Hands on Approach to Healing
A Hands on Approach to Healing
by Regina Cunningham
If you could easily apply a technique that could allow you
to release a wide array of fears and phobias, help you overcome anxiety,
depression and a variety of other psychological as well as physical issues,
would you want to know about it?
What if that very same technique was simple, easy to learn and remember? Would you definitely want to know about it?
Luckily what you are reading right now can be your key to opening the door to a new and exciting healing method called EFT. EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques and is a prominent therapy in the blossoming field of Energy Psychology. Don’t feel bad if you haven’t heard of EFT or even the term Energy Psychology. These terms have only been around for the last 20-25 years and only in small therapy circles.
To begin to understand EFT, you need to be aware of the concept of energy meridians. In ancient Chinese medicine, meridians were discovered to be the pathways in the body where life force energy flows. Call it energy, call it Source, call it life force, call it ch’i……whatever you want to call it, it is real! Acupuncture uses needles to stimulate these meridians to help dislodge the energy blockages impeding health. These blockages are said to be the origin of all dis-ease. EFT basically does the same thing, only without needles.
Energy meridians that move through our body can be blocked or disrupted by unresolved emotional issues, thereby compromising our natural healing potential. Although based on acupuncture, EFT has simplified the realignment process by gently tapping on key meridian points on the head, torso and hands.
Very often, people are aware of the events or memories that trigger emotional discomfort in their lives, but they have not yet connected those memories to the symptoms of disease in their bodies. Using EFT, it is possible to revisit the event(s) in question, and balance the disturbed meridians. Properly done, both emotional anguish and the physical symptoms often subside.
Gary Craig, the founder of EFT puts it this way, “The cause of ALL negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” This fundamental principle is the basis of EFT. All negative emotions are felt through a disruption of the body’s energy. Physical pain and disease are intricately connected to negative emotions. Health problems create feedback – physical symptoms cause emotional distress, and unresolved emotional problems manifest themselves through physical symptoms. So, the body’s health must be approached as a whole. You cannot treat the symptoms without addressing the cause, and vice-versa.
Clinical results with EFT have revealed an undeniable connection between unresolved emotional issues and serious diseases. EFT has found a way to address those issues, often reversing the effects of disease. Negative emotions result in energy disruptions that interfere with the body’s ability to fight disease. EFT can identify the causes of energy disruptions, often resulting in permanent solutions…..without medication!
As Mary Kuriger wrote in Alternatives Magazine in November of 1998, “Think this sounds amazing? Sounds unbelievable? Well, it is! In fact, data is coming in to show up to an 80% success rate! Therapists in many healing professions are using it successfully with clients who have been suffering from emotional issues for prolonged amounts of time. Private individuals are being trained to use this technique. Emotional issues addressed with EFT include: trauma, phobias, addictions, anxiety, anger, grief, compulsiveness, PTSD and peak performance. Positive results have been achieved with chronic pain, arthritis, ADD/HD, headaches, asthma and other physical problems.
The EFT website (www.emofree.com) contains dozens of success stories about EFT. This is an exciting, cutting edge therapy. It sounds a bit ‘out rks!”there’ to you, well, you are right. It is ‘out there’. It is very foreign to our western way of thinking and problem solving. But…it works!
What is BodyTalk?
by Regina Cunningham
What do you get when you combine the wisdom of advanced yoga and advaitic philosophy, the insights of modern physics and mathematics, the energy dynamics of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the clinical findings of Applied Kinesiology and Western medical expertise? You get BodyTalk, one of the fastest growing natural healthcare systems in the world today.
Developed by Dr. John Veltheim in the mid-90’s, BodyTalk is a system that seeks to address the “whole person” in its approach to healthcare. Its fundamental premise is that our health and sense of well being is based on the synchronicity and harmony of the physical and energetic functions that make up our entire body and mind. Additionally, in order to experience good health, each body part, system and cell should be in constant communication at all times with all other body parts, systems and cells. If this communication system becomes hindered due to the physical, emotional and mental stresses of our daily lives, we begin to experience breakdowns in our peace of mind, in relationships and in our health. Through exposure to the stresses of day-to-day life, these lines of communication start to break down, which leads to a decline in physical, emotional and/or mental health.
So why does this breakdown occur? What are the stressors that cause it to do so? It has to do with lifestyles that interfere with the natural processes of the body. In today’s world we have more of these stressors than ever before.
Some of these include:
- Physical stresses of everyday life such as bodily injury, overwork, overbooked schedules, lack of restorative sleep, poor food choices, improper breathing techniques and the lack of physical movement
- Chemical substances contained in the air, food and water that we consume along with toxic personal care products and household cleaning supplies we use
- Emotional traumas and issues that arise, emotions such as fear, worry, extreme anger, guilt, grief or sadness that we cannot process effectively
- Exposure to artificial energy fields that may exist in our environment
- Negative memories, beliefs and thoughts
These are just some of the stressors that negatively affect the communication networks or energy circuits of the body. It is essential that these systems are balanced in order to effectively coordinate the billions of synchronized activities per second that are necessary to maintain optimum health. The body can be hampered in its tasks because its communication systems have been severely compromised through the external stresses of life. In essence, the energy circuits are “blown” in a similar manner to electrical circuits in our house that “blow” when they are overloaded. Our body blows fuses when we are to stressed out. Sometimes the body can reset those fuses, sometimes it cannot. When the body experiences pain, disease or discord, it is a sign that circuits have been compromised.
BodyTalk helps to re-establish these energetic circuits and efficient communication in a quick and effective way, which then allows the body to continue the healing process. This is witnessed in how quickly symptoms can disappear and function returns, often within just one or two BodyTalk sessions.
The body has built-in mechanisms to initiate and complete healing processes. When we cut our finger, our body immediately begins to heal. There is no need to consciously tell the finger how to repair the wound, nor do we need a doctor to do that for us. Our body’s innate wisdom takes care of the job. This innate wisdom knows how to heal the body on all levels: physical, emotional and mental. As long as we have good communication established in and among all our body parts, healing should naturally occur.
With BodyTalk there are no diagnoses, no use of invasive techniques and no disruption of other body systems when addressing any problem on any level. In fact, the entire body/mind system is enhanced when BodyTalk is used.
What is most startling about a BodyTalk session is its simplicity. A session may last anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes depending on what the body is addressing in any particular session. The length of session has no bearing on it effectiveness. There is no need for the client to disrobe. Fully clothed, the client simply lies on a treatment table or relaxes in a chair.
The BodyTalk practitioner then uses a form of neuromuscular biofeedback, referred to as muscle checking, to establish a yes/no form of communication with the clients body. It is a process very similar to Applied Kinesiology. The practitioner then gently manipulates the client’s arm or hand while asking specific questions using a set protocol.
Once identified, areas of imbalance are held in focus by the BodyTalk practitioner or client, and then “tapped out” to re-establish clear communication within the body. This is done by the practitioner gently tapping on top of the clients head, followed by tapping over the heart.
Tapping on the body to get it to focus on healing has been used by some indigenous holistic systems, such as yoga, for centuries. In BodyTalk, tapping on the head tells the brain to take a look and correct the communication circuit that was found to be faulty. This activates the brain and helps to facilitate the body's own ability to restore and maintain its optimum health. Breathing deeply at this point helps the brain scan the body to locate the imbalances so that it can “fix” them.
The practitioner then taps on the client’s sternum, over the heart, to "save" the corrected energy circuit in the heart center and to share this information with every single cell in the body. The heart is responsible for communicating the state of the body's health to the rest of the body through the heartbeat. This means that your body will remember these changes after the session, just like hitting the save button on a document will save changes to the computer hard drive so you can access them again later. In this way, BodyTalk has a cumulative effect, each session building on the previous sessions.
The BodyTalk System addresses the personal as well as the spiritual development of the body/mind. It is an integrated way of discovering and working with all the aspects of our mental, emotional, relational, physical and spiritual being. It is ultimately about raising consciousness through the unveiling of beliefs and perceptions that no longer serve our health. As we begin to see the workings of our “insides” reflected literally in our perspectives, reactions and physical bodies, the need for a system that addresses the larger picture of healing is necessary. BodyTalk fits that need. It can be used as a stand alone system or in conjunction with any other healthcare system to increase effectiveness and support the healing process.
Among the many applications of BodyTalk, it is often used for rehabilitation, sports medicine, pregnancy and childbirth, preparation for and recovery from surgery, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma, immune system dysfunction and allergies, hospice care, and it can be routinely incorporated into daily life as a preventative healthcare system.
According to the International BodyTalk Association, currently there are thousands of BodyTalk Practitioners world-wide, with BodyTalk being taught in 35 countries with translations in 8 languages.
